In August, while on vacation my 24 year old son decided not to shave and let his beard/moustache grow. At first it was pretty scruffy looking, as most starts are, but it became a nice looking facial feature. I grew used to it. I liked it. And then he decided he must shave it off. But before he did, I took him into my studio and got some shots. Aferall, we must preserve these moments.
I used a black backdrop. I experimented a lot with the lighting but settled on this one as my favorite. I had a light behind him on the right side to light the back right side of his hair a little bit so it wouldn't blend into the background. In front, I used lights on both sides, but had the one on the left side on its lowest setting to keep the left side of his face somewhat in shadow to make the portrait more interesting. I didn't notice until afterwards that I didn't have the backdrop down far enough so you see a little bit of the wall at the bottom of the photo. I decided it wasn't that distracting so it's still my favorite.
